Grammar Point: AFFIXES

1. PREFIXES
A prefix is syllable added to the beginning of the root of a word. The prefix can change the meaning of the root word.
here are some examples.
a) Dis- means  not 
dislike - not like
dishonest - not honest
disappear - not appeaar

  • I really dislike the taste of coffee so I never drink it.
b). Un- also means not
uncomfortable - not comfortable
uninterested - not interested
unfriendly - not friendly
  • It's hard to get along with Jim because he is so unfriendly.
c). Multi - means many
multilingual - many languages
multicolored - many colors
  • A multifamily house has several apartments in it
d). Out - means more than
outgrow - grow  more than
outwork - work more than
outtalk - talk more than
  • Mary is a very talkative girl who can outtalk everyone I know.
e). Re means again
reread - read again
refill - fill again
resend - send again
  • They didn't get your e-mail message so you will have to resend it
f).Pre means before
precook means cook before
prewedding- before wedding
prearrange - arrange before
  • Don't worry about making plans for your trip; everything is prearranged
2. Suffixes

Suffix is a syllable added to the end of the root of a word. the suffix can change the grammatical structure of the root word.
The following are common suffixes to form a noun.
....ary, .....aire                   : secretary, millionaire
....an,.....ian,....ician         : beautician, pedestrian
....ance,..... ency             : distance, absence, importance
......ancy, ..... ency          : currency, occupancy
....dom                           : wisdom, boredom
......ee                            : employee, trainee, interviewee

....... hood                      : manhood, childhood
......ic, .....ics                  : logic, physics
-----is                            : analysis, crisis
........ism                         : criticism, racism\
......ist                             : artist, industrialist
......ion                            : relation, education
.....ment                          : management, enjoyment, entertainment
....... ness                        : happiness, laziness, business
........ ship                       : friendship, leadership, relationship

Examples:
  • Albert Einstein loved the violin, which he played for recrestion. He admired musicians who could play the violin very well.
  • Do the students know the difference between a mathematician and a math teacher?
